There is no knowledge gap. There is an implementation gap!

A team workshop participant looked happy after intense discussions and experiences in exercises. Many lights had risen and pennies had fallen. The team's difficulties over the last few months and years were now explained. Problems were clearly identified. Very surprised was his reaction on my conclusion that the work just was beginning. We still had to formulate a concrete plan as to how and what should be done by whom and when. Clearly, the team would have preferred to avoid this. Does that sound familiar to you? We are often satisfied with insights and findings. Unfortunately, knowledge is not enough for true development and change. Here are the 9 absolutely necessary steps for actual successful transfer and implementation:

  • Decide to implement with full determination
  • Accept making effort and change
  • Plan and formulate concrete goals and measures
  • Arrange initiatives into the big picture and with other activities
  • Prioritize necessities over personal needs and drivers
  • Involve and activate those affected or involved
  • Accept dealing with conflict and receiving feedback through difficulties
  • Persevere, even when facing reluctance and resistance
  • Review and celebrate results and successes

Some things are easier to do, other steps really require persistence and effort. Here is an encouraging message: If it's not tiring, it's not difficult. Start yourself and translate insights into action. Your New Year's resolutions can be a project. And please remember: Successful implementation brings satisfaction, relief and confidence. Recognize your learning journey when you look back. Good luck!
